A quick word on Wimbledon itself
If you've never been, a few things are worth knowing before you go. Wimbledon actually started life as a croquet club. The All England Croquet Club was founded in 1868, and when lawn tennis started taking off, the club pivoted with it. The first Championship was held in 1877, with 22 amateur men paying 11 shillings each to enter, and Spencer Gore winning in front of a crowd of just 200. Women weren't allowed to compete until 1884.
The all-white dress code is unique among the Grand Slams and dates back to Victorian times, when white was worn simply to hide sweat patches. The rules are still taken seriously today. Off-white and cream are banned outright, and the policy covers everything down to headbands and the soles of the players' shoes.
Strawberries and cream have been served courtside since that first tournament in 1877, originally because strawberries happened to be in season at exactly the right time of year. Over the two weeks, fans get through around 23 tonnes of strawberries and 7,000 litres of cream. There's also Rufus, the official Harris hawk, who patrols the grounds every morning to keep pigeons away from the courts, and the grass itself, cut to precisely 8mm on Centre Court every single day of the tournament. Wimbledon is still the only Grand Slam played on natural grass.
Even the trophies have their own stories. The men's singles trophy carries a pineapple on its lid, a nod to how rare and expensive pineapples were in the 19th century, while the women's champion receives the Venus Rosewater Dish, a sterling silver platter decorated with mythological figures. And the ball boys and girls go through genuinely military-style training, including a test to prove they can stand completely still for three minutes before they're allowed anywhere near the court.
None of that shows up on a scoreboard, but it's a big part of why Wimbledon feels different to every other tennis trip you'll take.

The opening week runs at a fairly consistent price across both showcourts, which makes it a sensible window if you want to see the tournament build without paying finals-week rates. Early rounds also mean more matches across the day, so there's plenty to watch even if your favourite player isn't out on Centre Court that morning.

This is the best value date across the whole fortnight, and it's worth a closer look if budget matters more to you than a guaranteed Centre Court semi-final.

These are the marquee dates of the whole Championships, and the semi-finals and the final itself sell out fastest of anywhere in the calendar. With only 2 to 4 spaces left across these three days already, if a finals weekend trip is what you're after, this is not one to leave until closer to the date.
Choosing your date
If you're after the full occasion, from the walk down the concourse to the roar around Centre Court as a champion is crowned, the final on Sunday 11 July is the one, though space is down to its last two. If you'd rather see close, competitive tennis without the finals-week price tag, the opening week from 28 June through to 5 July gives you Centre Court or No.1 Court access at the most consistent pricing across the fortnight. And if value is the priority, Thursday 8 July stands out as the most affordable date on the whole list.
